Sensitivity analysis for causal decomposition analysis: Assessing robustness toward omitted variable bias

چکیده
Abstract A key objective of decomposition analysis is to identify a factor (the “mediator”) contributing disparities in an outcome between social groups. In analysis, scholarly interest often centers on estimating how much the disparity (e.g., health Black women and White men) would be reduced/remain if we set mediator education) distribution one group equal another. However, causally identifying reduction remaining depends no omitted mediator–outcome confounding assumption, which not empirically testable. Therefore, propose sensitivity analyses assess robustness possible unobserved confounding. We derived general bias formulas for reduction, can used beyond particular statistical model do require any functional assumptions. Moreover, same apply with measured before after status. On basis formulas, provide techniques based regression coefficients R 2 {R}^{2} values by extending existing approaches. The -based offers straightforward interpretation parameters standard way report research findings. A Selection Bias Approach to Sensitivity Analysis for Causal Effects
The estimation of causal effects has a revered place in all fields of empirical political science, but a large volume of methodological and applied work ignores a fundamental fact: most people are skeptical of estimated causal effects. In particular, researchers are often worried about the assumption of no omitted variables or no unmeasured confounders. This paper combines two approaches to sen...
متن کاملOmitted variable bias and hospital costs.
This research examines the impact of omitted variables on the accuracy of parametric hospital cost function estimations based on Québec hospital level data. We assess the effect of omitted variables resulting from incomplete data on technology and performance measurement and on tests of the cost minimizing behavior of the institution. Our results show that important characteristics of hospital ...
متن کاملSemiparametric Theory for Causal Mediation Analysis: efficiency bounds, multiple robustness, and sensitivity analysis.
Whilst estimation of the marginal (total) causal effect of a point exposure on an outcome is arguably the most common objective of experimental and observational studies in the health and social sciences, in recent years, investigators have also become increasingly interested in mediation analysis. Specifically, upon evaluating the total effect of the exposure, investigators routinely wish to m...
متن کاملA Convenient Omitted Variable Bias Formula for Treatment Effect Models
Generally, determining the size and magnitude of the omitted variable bias (OVB) in regression models is challenging when multiple included and omitted variables are present. Here, I describe a convenient OVB formula for treatment effect models with potentially many included and omitted variables. I show that in these circumstances it is simple to infer the direction, and potentially the magnit...
متن کاملBias and Sensitivity Analysis When Estimating Treatment Effects from the Cox Model with Omitted Covariates
Omission of relevant covariates can lead to bias when estimating treatment or exposure effects from survival data in both randomized controlled trials and observational studies. This paper presents a general approach to assessing bias when covariates are omitted from the Cox model. The proposed method is applicable to both randomized and non-randomized studies. We distinguish between the effect...
